Triad Mixed Martial Arts History
Ten years ago Johnny Lee Smith started a tradition of
training that has yielded the best equipped congregation
of martial artists ever to be seen in the state. It was
a Saturday morning class where he taught the most
effective striking for actual combat that he had
cultivated over a career of martial arts training. He
combined this seamlessly with his encyclopedic knowledge
of takedowns and grappling without a gi. These sessions
became the foundation of Triad Vale Tudo.
It was a highly technical system of fighting that places
as much emphasis on timing and economy of motion as the
actual techniques themselves. These elements become
important when exhaustion enters the picture. Anyone
can resist very hard for one minute but, “If you can’t
fight when you’re tired, you can’t fight” says Tony
Sullivan the Triad jiujitsu blackbelt who normally
teaches the Saturday class. “I was lucky. Johnny built
me from scratch. Back then no one knew how to really
fight. All you had was spooky martial arts and movies
to go by. Johnny could read a guy’s movements and tell
you what he was going to do next. He gladly blew the
lid off all the scary death touches. He’d say, ‘In a
traditional way you’d strike like this because it was
thought to use chi. Well that’s a bunch of bull.’”
It is a tradition
that continues today. At Saturday class you can be
assured you will get the best fight training available
anywhere. Tony says, “The proof is in the level of the
students. They have the ability to beat people at their
own game; out-wrestling wrestlers, tapping submission
fighters. Last month a young national champion boxer
came in and ended up getting out-boxed by people he’d
never heard of. If this sounds incredible I urge you to
drop by. It can be a difficult class physically and
it’s not for everyone. But the people who like it,
really like it.”
In Triad Vale Tudo classes the sport of Mixed Martial
Arts is taught with great care and detail so that you
can learn the essential techniques to become a
well-rounded fighter. These techniques will equip you
with the tools necessary to strike effectively with your
hands, feet, knees, and elbows; how to fight from the
clinch; how to execute and defend takedowns and throws;
and how to properly defend yourself and inflict damage
on your opponent on the ground using strikes and
submissions. Triad Vale Tudo classes are delivered in a
controlled professional atmosphere, in a way that is
beneficial to participants of all skill levels.
Additionally Triad also teaches the original brutal
style of Vale Tudo (which in Brazil means "anything
goes") as seen in the first bareknuckle Ultimate
Fighting Championships which included face stomps and
headbutts prior to heavier emphasis on athlete safety.
Triad Vale Tudo is meant to prepare students for MMA
competition as well as real life self defense. |
